This Old Quilt
This original quilt was made in 1966 by my grandmother. I was showing quilts to my relatives when an aunt took a quilt out of a plastic shopping bag and asked me to "fix" it.
It was very thread bare in some spots, ripped in others. I have only been quilting for a bit over a year and had no idea how to restore a quilt.
The batting was in shredded lumps, totally like tissues ripped in little pieces.
So with stitch picker in hand, I removed all the sashings as this was the most threadbare of the quilt. I preserved as many of the original blocks as I could, and fused these to preserve the blocks.
I used a small check fabric to bring out the blue/green of the original center block and red binding to bring out the red in the old blocks.
I stippled the quilt in order to be able to go over the blocks that I just was unable to sew back together.
It is much smaller than the original, but actually is my most favorite quilt as part of it was made by my grandmother, who machined the blocks but handquilted the rest.
It really has been a labour of love.
I also put a label on it to denote the work done.
I don't really know what category to put this in. I'm picking pieced.
